दरियाई घोड़ा NOUN

1. गैंडे की तरह का मोटी खाल का एक जानवर जो अफ्रिका में नदियों के किनारे की दलदलौ और झाड़ियों में रहता हैं । विशेष— इसके पैरों में खुर के आकार की चार चार उँगलिया होती हैं । मुँह के भीतर डाढ़ें और कँटीले दांत होते हैं । शरीर नाटा, मोटा, और बेढंगा होता हैं । चमडे़ पर बाला नहीं होते । नाक फूली और उभरी हुई तथा पूँछ ओर आँखे छोटी होती हैं । यह जानवर पौधों की जड़ों और कल्लौ को खाकर यरहता है । दिन भर तो यह झाड़ियों और दलदलों में छिपा रहता है, रात को खाने पीने की खोज में निकलता है और खेती आदि को हानि पहुँचाता है । पर यह नदी से बहुत दुर नहीं जाता और जरा सा खटका या भय होते ही नदी में जाकर गोता मार लेता है । यह देर तक पानी में नदीं रह सकता, साँस लेने के लिये सिर निका- लता है और फिर डूबता है । यह निर्जन स्थानों में गोल बाँधकर रहता है । कभी कभी लोग इसका शिकार गड़्ड़े खोदकर करते हैं । रात को जब यह जंतु गड़्ढों में गिरकर फंस जाता है तब लोग इसे मार ड़ालते हैं । इसके चमड़े से एक प्रकार का लचीला और मजबूत चाबुक बनता है जिसे 'करवस' कहते हैं । मिस्त्र देश में इस चाबुक का प्रचार है । वहाँ की प्रजा इसकी मार से बहुत डरती है । पहले नील नदी के किनारे दरियाई घोड़े बहुत मिलते थे, पर अब शिकार होने कारण बहुत कम हो चले हैं ।

दरियाई घोड़ा या जलीय घोड़ा (Hippopotamus) एक विशाल और गोलमटोल स्तनपायी प्राणी है जो अफ्रीका का मूल निवासी है। दरियाई घोड़े नाम के साथ घोड़ा शब्द जुड़ा है एवं "हिप्पोपोटामस" शब्द का अर्थ "वाटर होर्स" यानी "जल का घोड़ा" होता है परन्तु उसका घोड़ों से कोई संबंध नहीं है। प्राणिविज्ञान की दृष्टि में यह सूअरों का दूर का रिश्तेदार है। यह शाकाहारी प्राणी नदियों एवं झीलों के किनारे तथा उनके मीठे जल में समूहों में रहना पसन्द करता है।
